Free Inquiry Topic #10: exploring Bjork’s ‘Hyperballad’

When I was 12, my family went to the UK for family vacation. While in London, we took a tour of Oxford University which included the music faculty building. In this building was a long hallway filled with the glamour shots of their most famous graduates. Among them were Thom York and Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead, and Bjork. I had a cursory knowlege of Bjork’s existence by then from seeing her once or twice on much music, but seeing that photo somehow made me very curious about her as an artist. Since, I’ve listened to more of her music and have gained some insight of her artistic voice. However, the phenomenon of Bjork’s art is that the more you get to know her, the less sure you are that you know her at all. She has always been such a unique voice in music, and I’ve always enjoyed the way she has challenged my own notions of genre, form, and technique.

Below is a link to Kirk Hamilton’s podcast, Strong Songs. Each episode is a deep dive into a song that interests him. This particular episode dives into Bjork’s ‘Hyperballad.’ I found it really interesting and insightful into understanding some of Bjork’s creative processes.
